Why Your Email Suddenly Stops Syncing — and What to Check First

Email usually stops syncing for a small number of predictable reasons. Before deleting accounts, resetting passwords, or changing settings at random, work through the simple checks first. Most email problems can be narrowed down quickly once you know whether the issue is the device, the app, the password, or the mail service itself.

Start with the obvious checks

Make sure the device actually has internet access. Open a browser and load a few different websites. If those fail too, the email app may be fine and the real problem is the connection.

  • Restart the email app.

  • Check whether airplane mode is on.

  • Confirm the device date and time are correct.

  • Check whether the mailbox is full.

If email works on one device but not another

That usually points to a local device or app problem. Compare the account name and email address, then check whether the app is asking you to sign in again. Password changes, security updates, and expired sign-in sessions commonly cause one device to stop syncing while another keeps working.

If email is failing everywhere

Test webmail directly. If the account will not sign in through the provider's website either, the problem is probably with the password, account security, mailbox status, or the provider itself rather than your phone or computer.

  • Try the provider's webmail page.

  • Look for a security alert or verification request.

  • Check whether the account was suspended or locked.

  • If this is business email, verify the domain and mail service are still active.

Avoid the nuclear option first

Deleting and re-adding an email account can help, but do it after the simpler checks. If the account contains locally stored mail, contacts, or calendar data, removing it without knowing how the data is stored can create a bigger problem than the original sync issue.

If email still will not sync after these checks, the next step is to identify whether the failure is authentication, server settings, storage, or the device itself. That is a much faster path than changing settings blindly.
