Restart or Shut Down? Which One Should You Use?

For troubleshooting, choose Restart first.

Restart: Best when something is frozen, slow, not connecting, or acting differently than usual. It reloads the operating system and clears many temporary problems.

Shut Down: Best when you are finished using the device or need to fully power it off.

Quick rule: If you are trying to fix a problem, Restart. If you are putting the computer away, Shut Down.

If a device is completely unresponsive, a forced power-off may be necessary, but use that only when normal controls do not work.
